7 reasons why you might miss an Internal opportunity
Do you know the single most attributed reason for somebody to quit his current job?
When he/she is overlooked for a promotion. Especially when a junior member in the team who may or may not be as skilled as you manages to get a promotion, you feel it is logically right to quit the current job. You feel slighted, insulted.
But is it the right thing to do. Pause a little. Let world pass by. Give your self a few weeks and wait for some time and you will be able to take more rational decision.
But you need to answer this question. Why in the first place did you miss an internal opportunity ?
If you don’t have answers, its probably a time to reflect back on yourself and your work setting. I am listing below a few points which came across when I was pondering over this subject.
#1 Relationship with the boss:
To me, the first thing that comes to my mind is this. Somebody gets overlooked for a promotion or an internal opportunity when they have a poor relationship with their boss/es or peers. Period. Get this right immediately if it is so in your case. I know it may difficult for some of you to swallow the ego and straighten things out with the boss. But you need to do it for your good.
#2 Doer Vs Potential:
You might be the best guy in your division to turnout a great job, always well appreciated by your colleagues, bosses etc. Is that enough? Unless your company sees you having the potential in you raising up to handle the pressures of this new job, you may not get a chance for an interview even.
#3 Social skills:
You cannot allow your introvert personality to mar your career. Today, as most organisations being flat structures, the relationship and interactions happen at peer level across different teams. You will be able to get your way through in this corporate maze with your social and networking skills. Using one’s position in hierarchy and power to move things may not always work.
#4 Domain expertise:
Many may be surprised by this point. Because, you may find that your boss is not exactly a domain expert of the domain he heads. But to be an evangelist kind of a leader for your team or the team you wish to lead, you will gain enormous respect if you are a domain expert in whatever domain you are in.
#5 Grabbing opportunities vs waiting for your turn:
This once again may be a reflection of the indivuduals personality. You find people unable or not wanting to break the status quo….reaction is like this…. “If the promotion comes I am happy, but actually I am OK with the current job….”
#6 Passion and Enthusiasm: Essential to live your life today…not just to manage careers.
#7 Too much talk and too little do: Self explanatory.
I haven’t gone great depths to explain each of these… but you can still understand. Now that you got these points to ponder….well its time to ponder and get the act right.
